$

(Newswire.net -- 3-8-2013) New Haven, CT -- First of all, not all window salesman are full of it, but, just like in any industry there is the good and the bad. There are some classic pitch lines, which the not so reputable windows salesmen of the world are deploying everyday.

1) This is today's special, if you don't sign today the price will be going up tomorrow.

2) We have a big job going on in the area, if you sign by the end of the day, we could fit you in with that large order and get you a better deal.

3) My sales manager is going to kill me for this, but if you can sign today I can take 20% off.

4) Well, I may be able to get to you a better deal, but, I need to get approval from my manager, can I use your phone?

So those are a few of the classics. Notice they all involve the consumer signing a contact today.

Tip: Never sign a contract the same day you get the estimate always take time to digest what they have told you. The same deal will be their tomorrow, these are replacement windows not the New York stock exchange.

Additionally, get a minimum of 2 quotes and even better 3. If that sounds like a pain in the butt, just do it, it could save you thousands of dollars depending on how big your job is.

Here are 2 more vinyl window scams:

1) The sales men will introduce a high price per window like $1200 per window. Then with each rejection by the consumer, the gracious salesman knocks 20% off. This can go on until it seems like they're getting a great deal like 50 or 60% off.

2) The salesmen will just ware them out. Overstaying their welcome taking advantage of polite people just wanting him to leave.

How To Get A Fair Deal:

The big companies are going to be in the phonebook, you remember what a phone books is, right? Also ask friends, family and coworkers.

If that just sounds like too much work there are free services online where you just fill out a short form and they distribute your information to 3 REPUTABLE Local Window Pros in your area. Click This Link.

Important:

Consumers should not be about lazy getting multiple replacement window quotes. What if the first salesman that walks through the doors is 30% higher than the true going rate, The consumer may agree and not even know they have been scammed. Happens Everyday.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 11, 2013 )
Chicago, IL -- Terra Research Foundation, one of the country’s top educational organizations, is announcing an impressive milestone: the Terra Research Foundation Community Service program has now put criminal offenders in over 1,750,000 educational classes.

Rather than traditional punishments, the Terra Research Community Service program focuses on rehabilitating the individuals. Because low levels of education have been directly correlated to poverty and crime in communities, by working to educate criminal offenders, the Terra Research Foundation has lowered the recidivism rates of troubled individuals in thousands of communities nationwide.

The unique community service program offered by the Terra Research Foundation gives the offenders vital new skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. Their newly-received education gives convicted criminals a definite edge in the job market, and also helps show them that there are more positive opportunities in life besides crime.

The program was originally founded in order to assist people who are unable to participate in traditional community service. Terra Research Foundation typically works with criminal offenders, those who are on probation, and juvenile delinquents. According to one of the founders of Terra Research, Scott Young, most community service programs are a temporary solution for a much bigger problem. Instead of doing menial tasks like picking up garbage on the side of the road, the Terra Research Community Service program gives criminals the chance to become better educated. By doing this, Young said they stand a better chance of staying out of the court system and living a successful and positive life.

“Terra Research believes that education is the most powerful way to improve a community,” an article on the non-profit organization’s website noted, adding that when criminal offenders apply to the volunteer program, Terra Research enrolls them into school.

“We currently offer over 3,000 courses, covering every subject you would find at any educational institution. Allowing our volunteers to decide which classes to take immerses them in something that they are interested in and helps to enhance their retainment of the information.”

Anybody who is interested in learning more about Terra Research Foundation and its community service program is welcome to visit the non-profit organization’s user-friendly website; there, they can read about the work that it does and why the community service program has been so successful.

About the Terra Research Foundation:

Since its founding, the Terra Research Foundation has been one of the nation’s premier educational organizations. As part of a worldwide movement that offers educational resources and humanitarian resolve, Terra Research distinguishes itself by working with technology to improve the lives of everyone that its organization can reach. The Terra Research Foundation is a federally approved 501(c)3 non-profit. For more information, please visit http://www.TerraResearch.org

Doug Stringer, founder of Somebody Cares, presents the vision for the 2013 March of Remembrance Houston at the Leaders’ VIP Dinner

Paul Sarvadi, CEO of Insperity, encourages attendees to join in the march.

Highlights from the 2013 Leaders’ VIP Dinner for the March of Remembrance Houston

Highlight from the 2012 March of Remembrance Houston held in Kingwood, TX
(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 11, 2013 ) Humble, TX -- On February 22nd, leaders from across the city met for a VIP dinner at the Sheraton Brookhollow to take part in the vision for the 2013 Holocaust March of Remembrance in Houston. Led by honorary chair, Doug Stringer of Somebody Cares, luminaries in faith, education, and government heard the witness of Holocaust survivors and those who participated in the March in 2012.

The March of Remembrance is a nationwide event sponsored by Christians who come together to honor and remember Yom Hashoah in support of the Israel and the Jewish community. Yom Hashoah (The Catastrophe,) also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day is a national holiday in Israel and is observed by those of Jewish descent worldwide.

The March of Remembrance has its roots in the March of Life in Europe founded by German pastor and Nazi descendent, Jobst Bittner, in Tubigen, Germany in 2007. In 2008, the first offshoot, known as the March of Remembrance in the U.S., was held in Dallas, Texas. In 2012, the first march was held in the Houston area in the community of Kingwood. Hosted by seven churches with participants from congregations across the city, almost 1,000 people participated in the event between the march and memorial service. For 2013, the vision has spread across Houston with coordinated marches being held in seven different Houston communities on the weekend of April 6th and 7th.

Msgr. Father Chester Borski of St. Martha Catholic Church, host of the 2012 memorial service, explained the impact the march had on the Kingwood community to the assembled crowd, “What we experienced in Kingwood was the fact that we could bring Holocaust education to the community. Sometimes we leave it at the university level or we leave it as an academic subject, but we're here to bring the experience to people who live in our community.
Keynote speaker of the 2012 Houston event, Holocaust survivor Ruth Steinfeld shared what the march meant to her.

“Everyone was just in their seat, waiting and happy to be listening to what was going on. I had never seen anything like that. I even said to them, 'Thank you, thank you," because, after all, who wants to hear from us? But they did. It was an honest afternoon where I felt love."

Paul Sarvadi, cofounder and CEO of Insperity (recently named in the top 3% of workplaces in the U.S.) encouraged all to participate in the march, “This is going to take a significant effort: time, effort, commitment. It's going to take sharing this vision with others rapidly so that they'll come alongside and so that this will come about.“

About the March of Remembrance Houston:

The Holocaust March of Remembrance Houston will be held on the weekend of April 6th and 7th, 2013, in seven communities across the Houston area. Beginning with a prayer walk and culminating with a memorial service honoring both Holocaust survivors and the rescuers. To participate in the march in your area, visit http://www.marchofremembrancehouston.org/participate and register online.

The March of Remembrance Houston is part of the U.S. March of Remembrance and March of Life (Europe.) The March of Remembrance/March of Life provides an opportunity for people worldwide to publicly demonstrate their respect for the Jewish people and their right to exist as a nation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Newswire.net via Emailwire.com - - March. 13, 2013) Portland, Oregon--

“It’s amazing to me the irony of my story,” AJ began, “how a book I didn’t enjoy, and was actually embarrassed to admit that I had read, changed my life forever.  ‘50 Shades of Grey’ was all that my girlfriends would talk about. So I decided to read it, but I just couldn’t understand the appeal at all.

“In a discussion with one of my friends, I mentioned my disappointment with the books and jokingly remarked that I could probably do a better job of writing a romance novel in my sleep. ‘Prove it!’ was her reply.

“Why not? What was stopping me? Nothing!” Harmon continued, obviously passionate about telling her story. “I’ll be honest; I didn’t do it in my sleep. I actually didn’t sleep much at all once I’d decide to give it my best shot.  Ideas and dialog for ‘First Class to New York’, my debut novel, occupied my mind when I should have been slumbering.”

AJ Harmon has now written and released 4 romance novels in the ‘First Class’ Novels contemporary romance series which was first released on Amazon Kindle November 17th 2012. This first-time, independent, self-published author was amazed on New Year’s Day, 2013, to discover that over 35,000 copies of her book had been downloaded in just six weeks.

On March 2, 2013 ‘First Class Voyage’ sailed onto the Amazon Kindle and was warmly greeted by fans of the series, according to reviews on GoodReads and other book blogs. ‘First Class Voyage’ is her 4th book in 4 months preceded, by “First Class to New York”, “First Class to Portland” and “First Class Justice”.

“It’s all being driven by my fans,” Harmon laughs. “How weird is that? To say I have fans. Six months ago no one had even heard of me, but it’s true, I do it for my fans. The emails and social media posts begging for the next book or for more ways to access them is inspiring. Just because the fans are asking for it is the reason we have begun releasing the series on Apples’ iBook and soon on Google Play.”

Houston Holocaust March of Remembrance Ignites from Priest's Lead

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 22, 2013 ) Kingwood, TX -- In March of 2012, Msgr Father Chester Borski of St. Martha Catholic Church in Kingwood, TX, was presented with a request: to host a memorial service for a Holocaust March of Remembrance, the first of its kind in the Houston area. He said yes. The resulting march and memorial service exceeded all expectations with almost 1,000 participants, the largest March of Remembrance in 2012 from the 60 held nationwide.

Rather than being an outreach of a single church, the March reached across denominational lines. Beginning with an opening ceremony at Kingwood United Methodist Church pastored by Rev. Jim Welch, a total of seven churches stepped forward to host the march that ended in the memorial service at St. Martha Catholic Church.

Pastor Richard Lee of Bethany Fellowship Church, one of the participating churches, credits Msgr. Borski with the generating the impetus that brought so many churches together, “He is very well respected in the community and people look up to him,” he explained, “He is a good shepherd to his flock.”

Pastor Rod Bryant of Calvary Christian Fellowship, emcee of the 2012 and 2013 memorial services in Kingwood, concurred. “Initially, it was a little hard to explain what it would look like because we hadn’t done it before,” he explained, “That Father Borski said yes meant everything.”

At a Leaders’ VIP dinner where the vision for 2013 was shared with leaders from across the city, Msgr. Borski explained the impact the march had on the Kingwood community to the assembled crowd, “What we experienced in Kingwood was the fact that we could bring Holocaust education to the community. Sometimes we leave it at the university level or we leave it as an academic subject, but we're here to bring the experience to people who live in our community.” At a following luncheon for pastors in the Kingwood area he explained, “When we ‘remember’ the Holocaust, we are ‘re-membering’ the body of Christ.”

Because of a Catholic priest’s understanding of the true meaning of catholic, concerning the whole rather than an individual entity or organization, that initial spark in Kingwood has ignited across the Houston area. The plans for the 2013 March of Remembrance Houston include marches in seven locations in the greater Houston area on the weekend of April 6th and 7th.

Community Service Help Launches a New and Innovative Charity Fundraising Program

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 23, 2013 )
Miami, FL -- Community Service Help has just announced the launch of a brand new charity fundraising program that will help manage non-profit organizations’ court ordered volunteer programs. Called Community Service Help for Charities, the program is a free service for all 501(c)3 non-profits.

Recently, the courts have frequently assigned community service to at-risk individuals. Because many people wish to fulfill their community service obligations at a non-profit organization, this has caused many charities to become overburdened with scheduling, required supervision, insurance and other tasks to manage and track the individuals. Unfortunately, these issues have caused some charitable organizations to stop working with court ordered volunteers.

Thanks to the new charity volunteer management program at Community Service Help, non-profits will have all of the extra work associated with court ordered workers taken care of. The online community service program includes electronic supervision, volunteer hour tracking, time sheets and logging, court reporting, and any necessary phone calls and customer support.

In addition to being completely free for the non-profit organization, the new program’s benefits include a $20 donation for every volunteer referred, statistics and volunteer tracking, and— because of the lack of restrictions based on the person’s type of crime, location, age or disability—unlimited volunteer placement opportunities.

“Don't stress about your court ordered volunteers, let Community Service Help manage your entire court volunteering program,” an article on the company’s website noted, adding that through its innovative volunteering platform they will handle everything on behalf of the non-profit organization from start to finish.

“Rehabilitation is always more powerful than punishment. By giving someone a chance to enrich their life and gain new skills Community Service Help seeks to rehabilitate at risk individuals and provide them with the tools they need to be a successful member of society.”

Anybody who would like to learn more about Community Service Help and its charity fundraising program is welcome to visit the organization’s website at any time; there, they can read in-depth information about the new service and the very tangible ways it helps both non-profits and those who need to finish their community service hours.

About Community Service Help:

Community Service Help advocates education as an alternative to traditional court ordered community service. Through their online program, offenders have logged more than 750,000 hours of self-scheduled schooling that allows them to remain employed while completing their community service hours. Community Service Help believes that addressing the direct correlation between crime and education is a more effective tool for rehabilitating offenders than traditional community service assignments. The Marketing Strategy Small Business Needs to Avoid Being "Carfaxed"

$
0
0

(Newswire.net -- March 25, 2013) San Antonio, TX -- How CarFax came to dominate the automotive industry is a fascinating story of a genius marketing strategy shaped perfectly by a keen understanding of human behavior.  According to at least one expert marketing consultant, it also serves as a cautionary tale for business owners who don’t yet realize the same strategy is in use again today – and that it’s so powerful it can either make or break their businesses.

“When I wrote ‘The Marketing Strategy Small Business Needs - To Avoid Being “carfaxed”’, my intent was to illustrate the marketing plan millions of small business owners are being manipulated with today.  Most aren’t even aware it’s happening to them,” says Steve Houston, owner of NetCentricity, a leading internet marketing consulting firm.  “Business owners typically have their hands full running their businesses and don’t have as much time as they’d like to stay current on many issues important to them.

“The genius marketing strategy CarFax used in the 1980’s to become a dominant player in the used car market,” Houston continued, “is essentially the same marketing strategy small business in America is seeing Google, Angie’s List and other big internet players using today, and every business is caught in the middle.  This new dynamic has huge implications for them, and as an advocate for the small-to-medium-sized business owner, I felt they needed to know.”

Houston’s provocative article goes on to explain how a company’s professional ‘reputation’ has now become the new benchmark for shoppers seeking trustworthy local business partners, and that highly influential types of “social proof” like online customer reviews, satisfaction ratings, and testimonials are swaying buying decisions toward certain companies and away from others like never before.  Customer reviews posted on Google Places, Angie’s List and many other business directory sites are defining the public reputations of companies today – and some business owners are beginning to realize they’ve lost control.

“The one marketing strategy small business owners must at least become aware of is called ‘reputation marketing’,” Houston continued.  “Today, as many as 87% of all prospective buyers go online first to find and research local companies before choosing one to patronize.  With hundreds - if not thousands - of prospects searching for your type of company every month, it’s absolutely critical that they like what they see written about you online.  The importance of making a good first impression online just cannot be overstated.”

The Marketing Strategy Small Business Needs - To Avoid Being “carfaxed”’ is a cautionary tale about the incredible reach and raw power of the internet, and how “trust” and “reputation” have become the new standards by which every company, whether they like it or not, is now judged online.  Houston closes by describing how the CarFax’s highly effective marketing strategy can, instead, be turned around and leveraged by businesses for their competitive advantage.

“Companies that start following – right now - the four key steps I outline in the article,” Houston concludes, “will become more profitable, quickly leap ahead of their competitors online, and position themselves to dominate their local markets.  This is the one marketing strategy small business owners who truly “get it” are investing money in – and they’re seeing it more than pay for itself.”

Save Our SPCO Announces Exploratory Committee to Examine Forming New Chamber Orchestra Society

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 28, 2013 ) Mineapolis, MN -- Save Our SPCO, a citizens’ group comprised of audience members and donors of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, has announced the formation of an Exploratory Committee of distinguished community leaders to examine the feasibility of forming a new organization to host a world-class chamber orchestra in St. Paul.

Mariellen Jacobson, Chair of Save Our SPCO, stated, “Our members are very frustrated by the length of the lockout and the lack of progress at the negotiation table. This has led us to kick off an exploration of a potential breakthrough alternative: formation of an entirely new organization to host a chamber orchestra in St. Paul.”

The initial members of the Exploratory Committee are:
* Representative Phyllis Kahn: Representative Kahn has served in the Minnesota House of Representatives since 1972 and is now in her 21st term in office. Among other responsibilities, Ms. Kahn is Chair of the Legacy Committee, which provides Constitutionally-mandated funding to the Minnesota Arts Board and the Perpich Center for the Arts as well as to the Minnesota Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

* Representative Joe Atkins: Representative Atkins was first elected to the Minnesota legislature in 2002, and is now serving in his sixth term in the House. Representative Atkins is an attorney who also served as Mayor of Inver Grove Heights for 10 years.

* Layton (“Skip”) James: Mr. James served as Principal Keyboardist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for 41 years, retiring in 2011. He has also performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and with a number of orchestras and ensembles throughout the world. He has also been a frequent conductor, director, composer and recording artist.

* Peter Howard: Mr. Howard was the Principal Cellist for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for 29 years, retiring in 2004. He has performed as a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra and a number of other orchestras in the United States and Europe.

* Donald Kahn: Mr. Kahn is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota. He is an amateur cello musician who enjoys performing with chamber ensembles and listening to both classical music and jazz.

* James Hainlen: Mr. Hainlen, a violinist, is conductor and artistic director of the Roseville String Ensemble. A respected conductor and music educator, Hainlen taught orchestra in the Stillwater Area Schools for 28 years. He has also conducted for the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies and Wisconsin Youth Symphonies in Madison, Wis., and guest-conducted community orchestras around the Midwest.

Additional individuals will be added to the Committee representing the Arts, Philanthropy, Education, Business, and Political sectors.

The Exploratory Committee will examine a wide variety of issues relating to the potential formation of a new organization including the willingness of highly-talented musicians to join a new organization, potential sources of startup funding, the staffing and infrastructure that may be necessary, and so forth. The Exploratory Committee will be supported by Save Our SPCO volunteers who have backgrounds in music, business, finance, communications, law, project management and other areas.

Rep. Atkins commented on the announcement, stating "I support the Exploratory Committee's efforts to seek creative solutions to the SPCO lockout. The SPCO lockout has gone on far too long. It is time to seek other solutions, and I support the Exploratory Committee's efforts to do that."

Layton James stated, "I support the establishment of an Exploratory Committee to examine the feasibility of an alternative organizational structure because I believe that the present Board has forgotten that its purpose is to be a support group for the SPCO, and not to be the orchestra itself. We need a management and Board that wants to keep a world class chamber orchestra in St. Paul. I hope that my participation in the Exploratory Committee will help make that happen."

James Hainlen commented, “The SPCO has a solid reputation as a world-class chamber orchestra. I am very troubled that as the lockout has dragged on, the orchestra is losing its talented musicians and may fall apart completely if something isn’t done soon. My feeling is that if SPCO cannot resolve the lockout, we must begin exploring another solution, and that may require a whole new organization.”

Eva Mozes Kor to Speak at Holocaust March of Remembrance in Houston

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 28, 2013 ) Houston, TX -- The Church at Bethel’s Family invites the Houston community to the March of Remembrance Houston on Sunday, April 7th. An opening ceremony at 4:00 pm will be followed by a prayer and awareness walk . A memorial service will begin at 6:00 pm featuring keynote speaker Eva Mozes Kor.

The Holocaust March of Remembrance is a nationwide interdenominational effort by Christians to stand alongside the Jewish people in their remembrance of Yom Hashoah, “The Catastrophe.” Following the inaugural march for the Houston area held in Kingwood in 2012, the effort has spread citywide in 2013 with seven marches being held over two days in the Houston Metro area on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. The Fondren area march at Bethel on Sunday is the culminating event of the weekend.

When asked why he and his church chose to host the March of Remembrance, Pastor Walter August replied, “For every preacher in the city of Houston, we can't go in the Bible without mentioning Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We can understand the pain of the Jewish people and we understand it a whole lot better than a lot of individuals. But we're only as good as when we're standing shoulder to shoulder.” As 2013 is the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, he felt it especially significant that his church participate at this time. Not only because of the similarities of the struggles and persecution between the Jewish people and African Americans, but also because of the support from the Jewish community during the Civil Rights movement. “That,” he said, “I assure you, we will never forget.”

Registration for the march will begin at 3:00 pm at Bethel. Those interested in participating may also preregister online at http://www.marchofremembrancehouston.org/central.

The highlight of the memorial service will be the testimony of Eva Mozes Kor. Kor and her twin sister were the sole survivors in their immediate and extended family of the Auschwitz death camp. They were one of the few sets of twins, out of over 3,000, to survive the experimentation of Josef Mengele. Ms. Kor is the founder of the Holocaust Museum and Education center in Terre Haute, Indiana, and the C.A.N.D.L.E.S., an acronym for Children of Auschwitz Nazi's Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors. This organization of the Mengele Twins has located and reunited many survivors of the experiments and is dedicated "to heal the pain, to teach the truth, to prevent prejudice.”

Memories- Your Temple of Life

(Newswire.net—March 29, 2013)  Tampa, -- The concept of balance is not so new, it has just been lost from a past that respected and held sacred the need for assuaging ourselves in a way that only we can define.  In our society, we rush to awaken, to eat, to study, to work, to eat, to sleep, and then to do it all over again.  When did we decide to put this value on a pedestal as our pinnacle for success where he “treadmill” cannot be turned down or slow down to enable us to enjoy that we which we place as our goal line?

Truthfully, there is no goal line and we have all fallen prey to the myth that the journey has no fun or pleasure, and the more miserable we are throughout the journey, the more pleasurable will be the destination.  The problem is, when do we draw that line from one versus the other?  When the gold watch is given after 25 years service for a Fortune 500 company that no longer can afford their unfunded pension liabilities tab?  It is there at our grasping, the journey is the destination and along the path that we take in our lives, it is all that we encounter that adds the rose petal to our blossoming flower.

The theme song, “Memories” from the Broadway hit musical Cats, is as defining and telling a song of the lyrics that describe this very journey that I speak of.  Grisabella, the old cat is aged and cast aside, as the youthful young cats, that are acrobatic and enjoying life, reject her until the end when she is about to go to “Cat Heaven”.    There is the sudden realization, that she in her infinite wisdom and age, is actually present to define life, happiness, and yes, memories that will never vanish.  It is this library of experience and life that is our “portfolio” of life which never closes the chapter for bigger and better things to come.  By the way, if they are not bigger and better, they are still an addition what has already been built which makes it bigger and better by default.

Youth is wasted on the young is something we say a lot, but when the youth opens their eyes to embrace what they are seeing and experiencing, this only enhances every day that we breathe life into the world that we live.

Doug Stringer, founder of Somebody Cares and Honorary Chair of the citywide initiative stresses the importance of the march, “I believe that we're in a critical place in our country. 2013 March of Remembrance Houston Southeast in Baytown

Highlights from the 2012 March of Remembrance Houston in Kingwood
(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 28, 2013 ) Baytown, TX -- Faith leaders in Baytown have made a practice of coming together for charitable efforts; however, on Saturday, April 6th, 2013, they will come together for a different reason: a Holocaust March of Remembrance.

After hearing about the March of Remembrance from a friend on Facebook, Pastor Jim Gill of Faith Presbyterian Church was inspired to sponsor a March in Baytown. “After just a few minutes of talking with the March organizers it became obvious that this was something of which I wanted to be a part,” Gill stated. “We now have representatives from eight congregations in Baytown that are interested in being a part of the March. “

Held on Saturday, April 6th, the Baytown march will begin and end at Faith Presbyterian Church located at 3900 Main Street. A brief opening ceremony will begin at 1:00 pm followed by a two mile prayer walk ending at Faith Church.
A memorial service will follow beginning at 3:00 pm. Mr. Al Marks, a Holocaust survivor of four concentration camps will share his experience as the keynote speaker. Mr. Mark’s daughter, Karen Aarons the Vice President of Religion for K’Nesseth Israel in Baytown.

Africa Monitor Declares Reckless, the Pardon Granted to the Convicted Felon and Former Governor of Bayelsa State – Nigeria, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha by President Goodluck Jonathan

$
0
0
(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 29, 2013 ) New York, NY - AFRICA MONITOR joins the US; UK; and other democratic nations around the world to condemn the recent pardon of Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha by President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria.

As a matter of public record, in September of 2005, Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was arrested in London on charges of money laundering. He was arraigned and awaiting trial when he suddenly fled in a mysterious manner to Nigeria where as a governor, he had immunity from prosecution. This led to an international arrest warrant (still pending) that was placed on him by the UK authorities.

While he escaped to Nigeria, due to the mounting international pressures, the Bayelsa State Assembly courageously impeached Mr. Alamieyeseigha for the crimes of corruption, which paved the way for his prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for which he pled guilty and served a short jail term in Nigeria.

In its Press Release of June 28, 2012, the US Department of Justice (Office of Public Affairs) declared it had “forfeited $401,931 in assets traceable to Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha…in a Massachusetts brokerage fund.”

It further stated: “In a separate pending civil forfeiture case filed in the District of Maryland, the Justice Department is seeking forfeiture of additional property traceable to Alamieyeseigha, a private residence worth more than $600,000 in Rockville, MD. The complaint alleges that the property was involved in money laundering.”

It is noteworthy that when Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was governor of Bayelsa State, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was his deputy governor. And when Mr. Alamieyeseigha was impeached as governor - for financial crimes by his State Assembly, Goodluck Jonathan who was then his Deputy Governor became the Governor, and later the president of Nigeria.

Whereas Africa Monitor does not question the powers of a President to grant pardons to deserving felons under the Nigerian constitution, it believes that this particular pardon was given (in quid pro quo) as a personal favor by President Jonathan to a one-time benefactor, which is detrimental to the nascent democracy and rule of law in Nigeria.

The ill-conceived pardon has drawn international criticism, especially from wide segments of Nigerians who feel that the President has betrayed them by setting back the fight against corruption in their country.

By international statistics, Nigeria is one quarter of the entire continent of Africa and has the highest number of its citizens currently residing in the United States than any other African nation. Thus, if Nigeria fails as a nation, the impact would be unbearable for the world, hence the reason to hold the government of Nigeria to a much higher standard of probity and accountability for Africa’s sake in particular, and for the world in general.

In the coming weeks, Africa Monitor will deliver a petition to the US Congress for a review of the Nigerian government‘s obligations under various international treaties, especially as related to transparency in government and money laundering laws with a recommendation to sanction the government and its officials for breaching international laws and democratic principles.
