Toronto customs broker plans to ship clothing to third-world countries

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 26, 2014 ) Toronto, Ontario, Canada --- Robert Makobero, a licensed customs broker in Toronto, has a unique plan to help the world’s poor people.

Here’s his idea: Through his company, Rimmexlink, Makobero will collect used clothing in Canada and then sell it at bargain prices to African counties. Using his skills and experience in freight forwarding, combined with a sizeable amount of capital raised through crowdfunding, he feels he can make it work. Makobero’s goal is to ship 30 containers of clothing per month.

“I really want to do something to help those in need,” said Makobero. “Providing clothing to impoverished people in third-world countries is something I’ve thought about doing for quite a while. I’ve finally figured out a system where it could work. But I need some help from the general public.”

He plans to ship clothing to Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo and Dubai.

“The global market is spurred by international transportation, and as Canadian economy trends are spurred by exportation, I am willing to start up with a freight forwarder and customs brokerage company in order to be a part of that soaring market,” Makobero said. “Rimmexlink will not only be a charitable organization but it will create jobs and help the local economy here in the Toronto area.”

The project is contingent upon raising $300,000 through an Indiegogo campaign, which can be viewed at the Indiegogo site.

The money will be used for a customs license ($50,000 Canadian), customs fees, shipping costs and collateral for a loan that will enable Rimmexlink to operate as a Canadian business.
Donations of any amount are welcome.

“I am hoping that people all over the world will support this project,” Makobero said. “Having enough clothing and having clothing appropriate for the weather is something that most of us take for granted. But for many people in third-world countries, this is a luxury they simply can’t afford.

“By contributing to Rimmexlink, you can help the less fortunate have adequate clothing. It’s the least we can do.”

For additional information, visit the Rimmexlink Indiegogo site at www.indiegogo.com/projects/connect-the-world-selling-ur-worn-clothing. You can also visit Robert Makobero’s LinkedIn page at ca.linkedin.com/pub/robert-makobero/94/3b6/645/.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 01, 2014 ) New Orleans, Louisiana -- The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is currently making rounds throughout major cities in the United States for its Annual 5k Walk for Education.

For the city of New Orleans, it will be held on October 11, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. and will take place behind the Audubon Park & Zoo. This will be the 27th year that the 5k has been set up in New Orleans, and this time, at least twenty-eight associates of local personal injury attorney Morris Bart will be showing their support for UNCF by participating as a team on the pavement, as well as being a corporate sponsor. In addition, they will be sponsoring one of the water stations along the course for the third time.

As a large team of lawyers that assist injured victims each day, this is certainly not the first time that Morris Bart’s team has shown that they care. Besides their long list of endeavors at work, Mr. Bart and his associates have also been known to contribute to such causes as the American Red Cross, the Special Olympics, and the United Way Campaign, to name a few.

Schooling has played a huge role in the success of Mr. Bart’s own career, which has allowed him to understand first-hand how important education really is. He strives to pass this enthusiasm for learning onto the rest of the community. In 2003, he dedicated $80,000 to his alma mater, Loyola University. The following year, he provided $10,000 to the seniors of Fortier High School for necessities such as caps and gowns and testing fees.

By participating in the UNCF’s Walk for Education, the supporting patrons at Morris Bart’s firm are softening the financial burden that often comes with college. More scholarships are able to be provided, and education is made more accessible. Beneficiaries include Xavier University and Dillard University. Those that would like to donate to this cause or participate in the walk may visit the UNCF’s website, where donations are still being accepted.

For more information on the community involvement of Attorney Morris Bart and his associates, visit http://www.morrisbart.com/ .

Connected Texas Releases New Broadband and Education Report at Texas Broadband Symposium

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 07, 2014 ) -- Press Release Distribution Services --

Austin, TX – Today, Connected Texas releases the Broadband and Education – Connecting Students in Texas report in conjunction with the Texas Broadband Symposium being hosted by the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) in collaboration with Connected Texas. This two-day symposium, October 7-8, focuses on broadband access and is bringing together key stakeholders to discuss ensuring sufficient, affordable access to high-speed broadband for Texas schools to support digital learning.

"Our report shows how critical it is for students across the state to have quality access to broadband both at school and at home," said Connected Texas Executive Director Don Shirley. "Digital literacy skills and the role that technology plays in delivering education go hand in hand; whether students need to go online to receive their school assignments, or in an effort to conduct research to complete their school assignments, having access to modern technology is the driving force behind the preparation of a twenty-first century digitally literate student."

Among the findings from the report:

Only 8% of Texas households with K-12 students do not own a computer, but more than 950,000 students in the state do not have broadband at home.
Students living in homes with annual household incomes below $35,000, rural students, and Hispanic students are less likely to have home computers or broadband service at home.
Not all students use the Internet at school – one in four rural parents of K-12 students in Texas (25%) say their child does not use the Internet at school.
The top barrier to broadband adoption among Texas parents of K-12 students is the parents' own lack of digital literacy skills.
One in five Texas parents of K-12 students (20%) say their children's school provides students with laptop or tablet computers; Hispanic parents, those with annual household incomes below $35,000, and those living in rural parts of the state are more likely to report that their children's schools provide computers to students.
Over one-half of parents of K-12 students whose schools provide computers say that they have helped their children's grades, and six out of ten parents who do not have broadband at home agree that having Internet service at home would make it easier for their child to do homework.

For this report, Connected Texas conducted a random digit dial telephone survey of 1,200 adult heads of households across the state, as part of the State Broadband Initiative (SBI) grant program, funded by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The SBI grant program was created by the Broadband Data Improvement Act, unanimously passed by Congress in 2008 and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009.

Los Angeles, California -- Fadi Chehadé, The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has extended his congratulations and best wishes to the newly elected Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

"We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Houlin Zhao on his election as the ITU Secretary-General," said Chehadé. "His global support was punctuated by the fact that he obtained 152 votes of the 156 countries that were present and voting in the election."

Zhao will succeed current ITU Secretary-General Dr. Hamadoun Toure in January and Chehadé made a point of underscoring Dr. Toure's contributions to enhancing lines of communication with ICANN.

"We are grateful to Dr. Toure for the bridges he helped build between the ITU and ICANN," said Chehadé. "Our interactions have been built on a foundation of mutual respect and a shared belief that the Internet has an increasingly important role in global socioeconomic development. We are enthused at the prospect of continuing those efforts with Houlin Zhao."

About ICANN
ICANN's mission is to ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet. ICANN was formed in 1998. It is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet's unique identifiers. ICANN doesn't control content on the Internet. It cannot stop spam and it doesn't deal with access to the Internet. But through its coordination role of the Internet's naming system, it does have an important impact on the expansion and evolution of the Internet. For more information please visit: www.icann.org.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 21, 2014 ) Jackson, MS -- Richard Schwartz & Associates, a well-established law office that is based out of Jackson, Mississippi has, yet again, decided to give back to the community by being a proud supporter of The Salvation Army Angel Tree this year, as they have for more than 15 previous years.

The Angel Tree benefits children who are forced to live under conditions that they are simply too young to be fretting over, such as poverty and broken homes. While these situations are not in their control, there is something that can be done by the good hearts of Angel Tree supporters.

In addition, the foundation supports the elderly, as it is often forgotten that they, too, sometimes have a difficult time getting by after retirement.

During Christmas seasons, Schwartz and his team of associates have been able to provide gifts and necessities to those in need. Choosing an Angel has become a tradition for the firm’s employees. Knowing that they are able to accomplish an act that is not only kind, but so needed by the children, is a gift in itself that the company looks forward to every winter.

Jeff Bennett performing with The Festival of Keyboards concert at Second Baptist Church

Jeff Bennett leading the Second Baptist Church North choir practice. Solo by Judith Roberts
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 23, 2014 ) Kingwood, TX -- The holiday season has arrived along with all of the holiday décor in the malls and stores comes the seasonal music, both contemporary and classic. Internationally renowned composer, Phil Barfoot, is presenting a new musical compilation titled, "The Heart of Christmas," which he hopes will become a beloved favorite. The premiere of the musical will be held at Carnegie Hall on Monday, November 24th. The choir of Second Baptist Church in Kingwood has been invited to perform in the event as part of the 350 member American Celebration Choir.

The choir at Second Baptist Church North is led by pastor and worship leader, Jeff Bennett. Music and ministering through it has been the focal point of his life. After graduating from Ouachita Baptist University with a Bachelors of Music, he prepared for ministry with a Masters of Arts at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. For the past 28 years, he has both served as a worship leader at various churches along with composing and performing his own music.

Bennett is committed to sharing the gift of music, not only through leading worship but also through the training and education of others. Through his nonprofit organization, Keys for the Kingdom, Bennett provides classes for upcoming instrumentalists and church ministry staff in addition to providing concerts to churches. Bennett typically performs at between 8 to10 concerts per year outside of his role as a music pastor.

It was through one of these performances that Bennett was brought to the attention of Mark Terry, the campus pastor of Second Baptist North in Kingwood Texas. Bennett was invited to be the lead music pastor for the campus in 2012.

Bennett has brought connections to nationally known artists to the already strong music program at Second Baptist. In January 2014, Second Baptist hosted the Festival of Keyboards along with a joint choir of 300 from among the five campuses of Second Baptist. Bennett has been a part of this four member group for the past 12 years.

Bennett has collaborated with Barfoot on previous projects, which prompted the invitation to perform at in the Fourth Annual Christmas in New York. "Phil invites choirs to participate that he knows can handle the music," Bennett explained. Forty-two members of the Kingwood campus choir along with 20 members from Woodway will be travelling to New York to perform at Carnegie. Along with the choir from Second Baptist, those from six other churches will be part of the American Celebration Choir.

In addition to the musical compilation by Barfoot, Bennett will perform his own instrumental music. This will be his second year to participate in the Christmas in New York concert. This year's presentation, "The Heart of Christmas," will feature vocalists Travis Cottrell and Marcia Ware. Author and speaker, Beth Moore, will provide the narration. The music will be published by Lifeway in 2015 and available for preview for the 2015 Christmas season.

Kingwood and North Houston Community Unite in the Season of Giving

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 05, 2014 ) Kingwood, TX -- While the Christmas season is known to be the season of giving, in the rush caused by added commitments and pressures, sometimes that fact is easy to overlook. Across the Northeast Houston area, individuals are taking action to change that.

From Thanksgiving, which was established to give thanks to God for his blessings and protection, to Christmas, a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and his gift to the world, there are efforts throughout the community to enter into the true spirit of the season and help those in need. The efforts are varied, from individual family efforts, to those organized by businesses and organizations, to community-wide efforts in the Kingwood area. Everyone can make a difference.

This is clearly illustrated in the example set by third graders Meredith Shuch and Kate Matthews. Members of Second Baptist church, the girls participated in the Sunday school program to collect peanut butter for the church holiday outreach, Angels of Light.

Each year across the five campuses, Second Baptist hosts families nominated by local ministries from across the Houston area. The guests are treated to dinner and a Christmas program. Following the program, each child receives a Christmas gift and every family receives groceries to stock their pantry.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Angels of Light program, which has grown to serving over 7,000 people. In order to meet the needs of the guests, the outreach is a church wide effort with members bringing donations of gifts, groceries, and donations for a month prior to the event. From the senior life groups to the preschool classes, the focus is on helping those in need with each Bible study and age group tasked with filling a specific need for the night.

The children's program, TeamKid, was challenged to bring peanut butter to fill the grocery sacks of the attending families. "We live in such a blessed area," explains Angel King, TeamKid Children's Director at the Second Baptist North Campus, "We want our kids to not only be thankful for those blessings, but to also realize that there are kids just like them that don't have those same blessings, that don't have the rooms full of toys, the closets full of clothes, and sometimes don't even have enough food to eat." King concludes with the goal of the program, "We tell our kids that when they help fill a need that someone else has, they are being the hands and feet of Jesus."

Third graders Meredith and Kate took this exhortation to heart. Not content with asking their parents to buy an extra jar of peanut butter to gift, they came up with a plan to give a gift from the heart themselves. Holding a joint birthday party, they gave up gifts for themselves and instead asked their guests to bring jars of peanut butter that would be donated to the Angels of Light.

"When I saw the wagon roll in with the 63 jars of peanut butter and heard what the girls had done, I was in tears" said Bridget Core, TeamKid Children's Bible Study Coordinator, "When you see something like that you not only know that the words and the message are being heard, but it makes you ask yourself, 'Am I doing all I could?"

The girls are not the only ones who have taken the spirit of the season to heart. Across the Northeast Houston area businesses, organizations, and individuals are banding together to serve others. If you have the desire to be a Secret Santa, visit the Kingwood Connection 2014 Giving page for a listing of places to donate and serve in Kingwood and Northeast Houston at http://kwtx.us/giving-season-2014

Lions Club Christmas Tradition Lives @ Chuck Colvin Auto Center

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 09, 2014 ) Portland, OR -- Charitable projects which provide a number of desperately needed forms of support for children in the local communities was dealt a huge blow. One of the largest annual events and a local tradition was almost lost; if not for the timely and charitable gesture from Mike Colvin, of Chuck Colvin Auto Center. For years, thousands of McMinnville and local residents had become accustomed, during the Christmas season, to seeing Christmas trees being sold by the local Lions Club on their Christmas tree lot, in the Walmart shopping center parking lot.

But then, something changed. Oh No! Where did all the Christmas trees go ... the Christmas trees from the annual McMinnville Lions Club Christmas tree sale, that is. A tradition for about ten years, local McMinnville area residents would stop at the Lions Club Christmas tree lot, examine and buy locally grown and harvested Christmas trees; and many would then go into to Walmart to purchase ornaments, decorations and presents, too. However, due to streamlining their processes, Walmart kicked the Lions Club off of their premises.

This long time tradition which many McMinnville and Yamhill County residents had come to count on, enjoy and take part in, and the charitable projects that depended on this event, were on the verge of a sad ending. However, in the true Spirit of Christmas Mike Colvin came to their rescue, quickly inviting the Lions Club to setup a Christmas Tree Lot and sell their Christmas trees a little further down Highway 99, at Chuck Colvin Auto Center.

A local roving reporter stopped on the lot this past season to talk to someone at the newer and more centrally located Christmas tree lot. Sam Justice, president of the McMinnville Lions Club, said, "We have lots of nice trees. Lots of nice green trees we sell to the public to benefit our charities". After the reporter commented about the smell of Christmas trees on the lot, Sam admitted, "The trees always smell really good. I always go home smelling like a Christmas tree after I sell Christmas trees here".

When asked about the type of Christmas trees local residents could find on the Lions Club Christmas tree lot, Sam replied, "We have Doug Firs, Grand Firs and Nobile Firs". Regarding the hours when McMinnville area residents can get a tree from the Christmas lot at Chuck Colvin Auto Center's lot, he went on to say, "During the week we're open from 1 [pm] to 8 [pm]; and on the weekends we are open at 9 [am] and close at 8 pm ... but, we will stay open later if there are people on the lot".

In response to a question about where the Christmas trees come from, Sam had this to say: "Our trees come from Yamhill County. Most of our Doug firs come from the Yamhill Tree Farm; and we get the Nobles from area farms ... or they may be coming out of Marion County. But they are all local trees. [...] They are all groomed trees. They are grown by Christmas tree farmers; intended to be Christmas Trees".

As people are driving down Highway 99W in McMinnville, going past Chuck Colvin Auto Service Center and the QuickLane Auto & Tire Repair Center, will see a green sign in front of the Christmas lot that says 'Merry Christmas. Lions Christmas Tree Sale Here' When asked about the location of their Christmas tree lot, Sam had this to say. "Right here at Chuck Colvin, we're really appreciative of Chuck Colvin Ford for letting us use their facility here. They have been really gracious hosts for [the entire time we have been here]; and we are really appreciative of it and try to be good stewards of their lot. I think they enjoy having us here; and we sure enjoy being here. He agreed that it definitely brings the Christmas spirit to the lot.

Gary Edwards, the General Manager at Chuck Colvin Auto Center, said "We move 100 cars, and donate 1/3 of our highway frontage (prime real estate) to the Lions club so they can do their Christmas tree sale".

When asked how the Lions Club would use the money generated from the Christmas Tree Lot for Lions Club projects, which help the local community, Sam Justice shared some of the really impacting benefits of this event, stating, in part: "We give out high school scholarships every year. We use the money [for vision screens] for grade school children. Every year we're in the schools and grade schools working with the local school district helping them to screen students for sight issues, to identify children who need eye glasses. We also use the funds to buy flags for first graders. Every first grader in the district gets an American Flag. We also support music in the schools. We [have been a Super Nova] sponsor of Jazz Night, which is a music booster program".

The Lions Club Christmas Tree Sale in McMinnville has been a long time tradition, which has helped fund a number of local charitable projects. These charitable projects and the annual tradition were almost lost a few years back. However, thanks to Chuck Colvin Auto Center, the tradition still lives on and is getting stronger now at the more centrally-located lot on HWY 99; and is another example of how the staff and management of the locally owned and operated Chuck Colvin Auto Center are committed to community involvement and giving back to McMinnville and Yamhill County residents.

Car Dealer Helps Salvation Army Feed the Hungry

$

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 09, 2014 ) Portland, OR -- The spirit of giving has become a tradition for the staff and crew of Chuck Colvin Auto Center, a local car dealer in McMinnville. Each year employees at this car dealership, take an active part in helping out others in need in the community.

With about 13.9% of the families of Yamhill County living below the poverty level, food banks and food pantries, such as the one at the McMinnville Salvation Army, are often stretched to the limits or beyond.

The Salvation Army Food Pantry is one of the agencies who help out thousands of families and individuals throughout the year. When they have food, or the money to buy more food they can help stamp out starvation. However, when the Salvation Army food pantry runs out of food, they are forced to turn away hungry families in need.

When asked about their involvement in the community, to help with issues such as these, Gary Edwards, General Manager at Chuck Colvin Auto Center, stated in part: "We also have an employee food drive donation for the local Salvation Army. Our employees donate money all year long as a payroll deduction, and we cut them a check every December for them to buy food ..."

Thanks to the benevolence and selfless actions from many of the 50 plus workers and staff at Chuck Colvin Auto Center, they are able to help the Salvation Army from having to turn away families living in poverty who are hungry and in desperate need of food.

When we spoke with the General Manager and others from Chuck Colvin Auto Center they were unable to provide us with the amount of the check that they will be giving to the Salvation Army later this month. There are still more donations to be counted and tallied up because they have not reached the last pay period for this year. What we can be certain of is that it will be a substantial amount, as it has been in years past. What else we can be assured of is that it is a tradition of giving that is going to continue to grow and thrive; to help the Salvation Army in McMinnville to be able to help feed the families and individuals in McMinnville that need it the most.
