According to the United States National Pest Management Association, bed bug levels are approaching pandemic proportions. Although it is unclear whether the UK has or is likely to have a bed bug problem, this overseas trend is a call to arms for professional cleaners, home owners and business owners alike.

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are nocturnal insects that feed on human blood. Their nocturnal habits mean that they are not often spotted easily during the day time, in spite of their comparatively large size (5 mm by 3 mm at their largest), especially compared to other insect parasites such as fleas and head lice (both about the size of a sesame seed). Bed bug bites can cause skin rashes and irritation, and there is a possibility that they can spread more serious infections, such as the antibiotic-resistant “Golden Staph” (Staphylococcus aureus) bacterium. During the daytime, bed bugs hide in crevices and other small, dark locations around homes and offices. Female bed bugs lay up to five eggs daily after reaching maturity and bed bugs reach maturity in 10 days. They can survive for up to a year without feeding, and their long life plus rapid breeding add up to high potential for a severe infestation if they are not dealt with and eliminated.

However, the good news is that this old-fashioned problem can be solved by an old-fashioned remedy, namely extra vigilance in cleaning, both in homes and offices. Vacuum cleaners are an effective solution, especially when attention is paid to using the narrower nozzles (commonly called “nosy parker” attachments) designed to reach into small spaces. Additionally, heat has been proven to be effective at killing both the bed bugs and the bacteria they transmit. (Newswire.net --February 3, 2013) Portland, OR --  Lake Oswego Homes hit the top of the RMLS (Regional Multiple Listing Service) Charts in December, 2012.  The RMLS reports on real estate statistics for the Portland Metropolitan Area.  This review noted that "the Portland real estate market ended a remarkable year with mixed results in December. Closed sales at 1,760 were higher than the previous December’s 1,612 by 9.2%, while pending sales were 4.1% under the 1,443 accepted offers in the same month of the prior year."  Dan Crider, a Lake Oswego Realtor with the Premiere Property Group, told us that he thought the key metric in this report was the Inventory in Months.  This number fell from 7 months at the beginning of 2012 to 3.6 months at year's end.  Crider said that "a seller favored market is usually indicated by less than a 5 month inventory level and that this is further confirmed as a seller's market by the increase in average price."

(Newswire.net -- February 5, 2013) New York, NY -- There have been many myths about weight loss and dieting, but research published this week found that out of 420 people on a 20-week weight-loss programme, those who ate an early lunch lost 2.2kg more than those who ate lunch later (9.9kg versus 7.7kg).

The study, which was carried out in Spain, classified a late lunch as after 3pm. Both groups of people ate the same calories: 40% of their daily total was consumed at lunch. When they ate breakfast or dinner didn't make any difference, but we don't know about other factors, such as when they exercised. It was an observational study, which means it couldn't prove that eating a later lunch reduced weight loss, it can only show the two might be linked. However it adds to the debate on whether a calorie is a calorie regardless of when you eat it and where it comes from. If eating earlier could mean you convert fewer calories to fat, surely it's worth a try?

Usually you would probably eat lunch earlier than 3pm so this study won't change many people’s lives. However, research has shown that evening snacking can make you put on weight – although the tests were only conducted on mice.
