(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 21, 2013 ) Dothan, AL – Beyond Shelter is a major force behind lifting homeless people out of poverty and providing assistance to those in need in the Los Angeles, California area. This non-profit organization started in 1988 as homelessness increased in LA. Their mission statement today is to “develop systemic approaches to combat poverty and homelessness among families with children, and to enhance family economic security and well-being.”

One method of helping homeless families has centered around a program referred to as Housing First which takes a homeless family and places them as quickly as possible into their own home instead of a shelter or half-way house. After the home is secured and that particular stress is removed, the family is then able to focus on doing what is necessary for them to regain their lives. Beyond Shelter continues to help for six months to a year with jobs assistance, childcare and other needs. The award-winning Housing First program has helped over 4,000 families and has been copied by other groups around the world.

Beyond Shelter’s Employment Services Department maintains a goal of helping people get off and stay off government welfare programs. The department provides job placement support, job listings and computers for people to use while researching jobs. They also provide typing and basic skills tutorials. A case manager and counselor work together to assist the job seeker.

In addition to working with local landlords to provide housing and leases for those being helped, Beyond Shelter has developed at least 4 apartment complexes totaling over 150 units, some in the hardest hit areas of Los Angeles. Central Village, which opened in 2009 also includes over 50,000 square feet of commercial space which is helping to revitalize an entire neighborhood and provide numerous jobs.

Beyond Shelter seeks help from members of the community. Simple things like house-warming gifts can go a long way to showing people that they are still cared about. The organization maintains a gift registry at K-Mart for this purpose (http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/GiftRegistryItemView?sortByItem=category&externalId=900009412110010101&storeId=10151&langId=&catalogId=10104&grUserType=BUYER&fwdURL=GiftRegistryItemfwdView). After purchases are made the items can even be delivered to Beyond Shelter for you so you do not even have to live in the Los Angeles area to be able to help out! During the holidays families can be adopted and a toy drive is also held. Stock, real property and other asset contributions are welcomed. Of course, cash donations also help.

Beyond Shelter can be contacted at its main headquarters at 340 North Madison Avenue in Los Angeles, called at 213-252-0772 or emailed at info@beyondshelter.org. Much more information on how this organization is making a difference in Los Angeles can be obtained on their website at www.beyondshelter.org.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 26, 2013 ) Dothan, AL – The effects of the recent recession are still being felt by families across the nation. Christmas remains bleak for many people who are trying to determine how to purchase gifts for their children or find a good meal to enjoy. Fortunately, there are many organizations that step up to fill the gap and help make the holiday season a happier time. However, despite numerous donations, it is recommended that requests for toys and gifts be made sooner rather than later.

One of the most famous is the Marines’ Toys for Tots Charity. A needy person can contact them by going to their website, www.toysfortots.org then clicking the link “Request a Toy” located in the top menu bar. On the next page, the person should select the state and area needed to be directed to the closest Toys for Tots center’s website. The smaller websites vary in the manner of requesting toys, but in general, locating another link to request a toy will lead one to the area coordinator’s contact information or a form to complete.

Another organization known for helping thousands of people during the holidays is the Salvation Army. Using donations provided by generous people dropping money into the red kettles outside of stores, depending on location, the Salvation Army provides meals, gifts, clothing and food baskets for those in need. The best way for a family to be put on the list for donations is for them to contact their nearest Salvation Army office. The locations can be found by going to the Corps’ website, www.salvationarmyusa.org, and entering a zip code into the box located at the top right side of the homepage. A list of the nearest community centers will be shown along with a phone number for the needy person to call.

The United Way provides millions of dollars to communities through numerous programs throughout the year. However, they still make special efforts throughout the holidays to help using the Angel Tree program where people can contribute money or specific items for the needy. In many communities the United Way provides meals along with gifts. The United Way typically requires proof of residence, people in the household and income prior to providing assistance, but then can also be tapped for additional help such as paying utility bills if needed. To get on the donations list, a person needs to contact their local United Way office by calling 211 or visiting UW’s website at www.unitedway.org and entering their zip code in the box located at the upper right of the screen.

Additional local assistance can be found throughout cities all across the nation through churches and other private organizations. Often local media and news outlets will have information on these groups.

By spending a few minutes contacting various groups and organizations now, everyone should be able to make sure that their family receives some Christmas cheer this December.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 03, 2013 ) Dothan, AL – A small program started in 1999 has helped numerous homeless and downtrodden people get a start out of poverty while helping the Los Angeles community get cleaner. Food on Foot began providing meals for the needy every Sunday on the steps of Hollywood’s post office in 1996. In 1999 the organization began recruiting members of the homeless community to pick up litter in exchange for food gift cards. Participants in the program are provided with two large garbage bags and directed to an area needing cleaned. On returning the bags full of trash, the worker is provided with $10 in food gift cards, a chicken dinner and some healthy fruit and snacks.

As the worker shows reliability and desire over time, they are slowly transitioned into a cleaning crews for shopping centers and other areas around Hollywood for additional food gift cards. The end goal is for the worker to develop strong work practices then to be able to find steady employment and break the cycle poverty can create. Currently between forty and fifty homeless and poor people participate in the trash for food program.

Chandra will be graduating from the program soon and is an example of what can be done to help people. When she started collecting trash for food she was living out of her car, but now has a full-time position at a postal center and resides in an apartment.

Food on Foot holds its weekly meal each Sunday afternoon at 3:15 at 1625 N. Schrader Blvd. in Hollywood. About 200 meals are served by volunteers. Each meal service costs $2000 to $2500 for food and gift cards. For a minimum $20 donation anyone can volunteer to help serve the meals.

This organization can be contacted through their website, www.foodonfoot.org, or by calling 310-442-0088.

    (EMAILWIRE.COM, November 16, 2013 )
Queens, NY -- New York State Senator Jose Peralta presented a New York State Senate Proclamation to the non-profit Foundation for a Drug-Free World Northeast Chapter and the Fialkoff Foundation for a Drug-Free World NYC Program last night at the Fialkoff Dental Study Club. Dr. Bernard Fialkoff, Queens Periodontist and Dental Implant Specialist, founded the study club in the mid ‘90s and more recently, founded the Foundation for a Drug-Free World Queens Chapter (drugfreeworld.org) by running the community service program through his office and educational group. In the past two years, Dr. Fialkoff’s chapter presented more than 200 free drug education events to NYC schools, after-school programs and community centers. In 2006, Meghan Fialkoff, Community Affairs Director at Dr. Fialkoff’s office, founded the Northeast Chapter of Foundation for a Drug-Free World. Together, they have presented more than 400 free drug education events, pledging in more than 30,000 students in the Youth Drug-Free Pledge in the past seven years. Senator Peralta’s presentation acknowledged their work and the significance of professionals taking part in vital programs like these.

Senator Peralta read the proclamation which states, “It is the belief of the legislative body that when organizations of such noble and accomplishments are brought to our attention, it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend those organizations for the edification and emulation of others. I recognize that in the Foundation for a Drug Free World we have an organization worthy of our highest respect and esteem.” The proclamation continues to add, “The Foundation for a Drug Free World, Northeast Chapter, under the stewardship of its Director, Meghan Fialkoff and the Queens Chapter, under the leadership of its founder Dr. Bernard Fialkoff and through the hard work of its Lead Presenter David Tidman, and Doctors Mercedes Mota-Martinez and Doron Kalman, has made more than 200 drug awareness presentations in just the last two years. These presentations provide a vital service by giving our young people the tools they need to live drug free and empowering them to make the right choices.”

Dr. Bernard Fialkoff said, “The success of any program begins with the individual. Any worthwhile activity begins with individuals then spreads to local groups, the city, the state and then nationally. Many professionals are speaking about how the negative environment is affecting our practices. This program helps children to stay off of street drugs and has gotten positive results. We are proud that Senator Peralta is acknowledging this program and taking a lead role in helping to change all of the downturn that has occurred in the last few years. As professionals, we can feel proud to live up to our purpose of helping our community and improving their lives. What better way there is to show this and to do this than to help the very children who will in short order, be in charge of our area.”

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free. No one, especially a young person, likes to be lectured about what he or she can or cannot do. The foundation provides the facts that empower youth to choose not to take drugs in the first place through free educational events and curriculum. Through a worldwide network of the foundation’s volunteers, 56 million educational handouts have been distributed, tens of thousands of drug awareness events have been held in some 120 countries and Truth About Drugs public service announcements have been aired on 275 television stations. These materials and activities have helped people around the world learn about the destructive side effects of drugs and thereby make the decision for themselves to not use them.

The Spanish American Medical Dental Society, led by President Dr. Mercedes Mota Martinez, has supported the foundation’s work, and encouraged their doctor and dentist members to take part in providing free presentations to their communities and schools. Senator Peralta spoke about the important work of the foundation at the society’s Doctors Day Celebration in April which resulted in doctors and dentists signing up to volunteer for the program. Dr. Doron Kalman, President of the Queens County Dental Society, has trained and sent his office staff to deliver drug education and awareness presentations to Queens locations, supporting the foundation’s work through his role as medical professional and president of the society.

The study club was founded in the mid ‘90’s and has an audience of 50-100 dentists each month. It focuses on raising dental excellence, standards and camaraderie in the New York boroughs. Dr. Bernard Fialkoff has a periodontal, dental implant and cosmetic laser surgery office for more than 31 years on 56-03 214th Street in Bayside, NY. London, UK -- Following the devastation of typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines on 8 November 2013, mobile messaging specialist Silverstreet, is implementing its tried and tested internal social responsibility program - providing employees with the opportunity to donate to the aid efforts of non-profit organization It Matters. Staff can trade in annual leave days or contribute through payroll and Silverstreet will double all staff contributions. To kick start the relief fund, Silverstreet has donated USD $7, 500 in cash to immediately assist with the daily efforts of the It Matters team and has further calculated that with staff contributions they expect to contribute a total of around USD $12,000.

It Matters is a non-profit organization aimed at uplifting the lives of vulnerable individuals in Cebu, Phillipines through educational programs supported by organizations with the energy and resources to assist. The organisation has set up a dedicated operation to provide relief operations to the typhoon victims facing hunger, thirst, sickness and grief. Follow them on Facebook to keep up to date on each drop-off via their regular video reports.

“This tragedy is heartbreaking and as a socially conscious company we believe that taking part in global relief efforts is of absolute necessity. Natural disasters of this magnitude require those that have the means, be it time or money, to come together and provide support and solidarity for the affected,” says Simon Landsheer, CEO of Silverstreet.

“We are extremely proud to be joining forces with It Matters,” Simon continues, “they are as grass-roots as it gets, with each team member using their own time and resources to source aid products for those affected by the typhoon and driving in every night with a truck to the disaster area to hand out these emergency aid packages. USD$2 will feed a family for a day so with our initial donation, It Matters is able to feed at least 3750 people! We're all looking forward to sending them more support over the coming days and hope other companies will follow suit.”

In 2012 alone, Silverstreet and its staff members donated in excess of EUR 15, 000 via its internal social responsibility program towards relief for the Haiti and Japan earthquakes.

    (EMAILWIRE.COM, November 30, 2013 )
Beverly Hills, CA -- Humble Pen announces the launch of its Indiegogo campaign to raise 48,000 dollars to start production of the Humble Pen, fund marketing strategies, and prepare the pen for wide distribution. Made of eco-friendly and sustainable bamboo, each beautiful Humble Pen holds a greater vision; 10 dollars from each pen sold goes to support the education of disadvantaged children through Humble Pen's partner programs with children's schools in India, Cambodia and Haiti. Humble Pen aims to be one of the top Indiegogo projects by the campaign's end on January 10, 2014.

Created with the vision to "reignite your love of writing," Humble Pen allows writers to reconnect with the joys of writing while helping provide an education for a child who would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn to write. Humble Pen has partnered with three outstanding children's schools to support education in the impoverished nations of Haiti, Cambodia and India. Additionally, each Humble Pen is crafted by a group of artisans in a cooperative, providing financial stability and income to families and individuals.

The Humble Pen also provides a way for those who want to donate to Haiti or support educational programs in disadvantaged nations to give in a unique and creative way. Projects like the Humble Pen campaign also provide an effective option for those who want to know how to raise money for important causes while also providing employment opportunities, using sustainable materials, and creating a product that is meaningful on many levels.

"The beauty of the Humble Pen is that it speaks to the connection between each of us and the importance of celebrating the privilege of the written word," says Humble Pen founder Mihir Patel. "In a time when electronic communication has overtaken traditional pen and paper, some children still never have the opportunity to learn to write and never know what it is to hold a pen. In reawakening our own love of writing, we can nurture and support this in a child, and that is a very special gift."

Hoping to become one of the most popular Indiegogo projects, The Humble Pen Indiegogo campaign runs until January 10, 2014. Some of the perks for supporting the campaign include a Humble Pen and five pieces of artist-inspired stationary for 48 dollars; a Humble Pen, five pieces of stationary, and thank you letter from a child for just 118 dollars; and the ultimate perk, four Humble Pens, four hoodies, four t-shirts, and a Giving Trip to India, Cambodia or Haiti to interact with the children and work with a team at the giving site for a donation of 4,000 dollars.

    About Humble Pen:

Artisans using sustainable bamboo handcraft each Humble Pen. For every pen purchased, a portion of the proceeds go towards educating a child in Haiti, India or Cambodia at one of Humble Pen's partnering schools. With a mission to "reignite your love of writing," the Humble Pen allows writers to fall in love with writing again while providing the opportunity for a child to discover these joys as well. (EMAILWIRE.COM, January 29, 2014 )
Houston, TX -- Jennifer Buergermeister, MA, DD, C Ht, ERYT, a yoga activist, founder of the Texas Yoga Association and self-described “Facilitator of Change” has just announced the launch of a fundraiser on the Indiegogo website that will help raise money to hold the 5th Annual Texas Yoga Conference that is designed to promote wellness.

Buergermeister is also the CEO of Breathe the Cure, Inc., a Texas 501(c) (3) which helps facilitate programs for the community including Jennyoga and the Texas Yoga Conference.

The new fundraiser, which Buergermeister has named “Texas Yoga Conference Breathes the Cure for Charities,” is about much more than raising money for her own conference. Instead, she has a very altruistic goal in mind. Breathe the Cure will keep just 50 percent of the proceeds raised to help facilitate the annual yoga conference and its other programs, and then it will donate the other half of the money to the organization’s 2014 participating non-profits. The funds will be divided up equally and given to groups including Hope Stone, Boys and Girls Country, Everlutionary, Expedition Balance, Friends of Integrative Medicine at MDACC, Crohns and Colitis, In-Powered by One Significant Act, and others.

“I am currently studying at Rice University in the prestigious LINE Program, Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership,” Buergermeister wrote in the article that accompanies her fundraiser on Indiegogo, adding that this campaign is part of her graduating project to raise money for Breathe the Cure and its participating philanthropists at the Texas Yoga Conference in 2014.

“This grassroots campaign is extremely important. It brings community together to share what is integrative, authentic and life-changing. Our conference creates a unique experience and transforms lives supporting our locals - from Texas, for Texas, and because of Texas.”

Anybody who would like to learn more about Buergermeister’s fundraiser is welcome to visit the Indiegogo website at any time; there, they can read about Breathe the Cure, Buergermeister’s passion for helping other non-profits, and how donors will be rewarded for their contributions

Mesa, AZ -- ScienceForAllFoundation.org has just announced the launch of its non-profit organization and website. The Science for All Foundation is dedicated to promoting an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in youth.

The Science For All Foundation (SFAF), which has also just started a new Facebook page that people are can visit to get more information, Facebook.com/ScienceForAllFoundation, is specifically focused on encouraging young women to pursue both education and careers in science.

As a spokesperson from the Science for All Foundation noted, issues relating to the lack of women in science-related careers are well known. For example, a 2011 article from the US Department of Commerce titled “Women in STEM Gender Gap to Innovation” reports that although women fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy, they hold less than 25 percent of STEM jobs. This has been the case throughout the past decade, even as college educated women have increased their share of the overall workforce.

In addition, the article noted, women with STEM jobs earned 33 percent more than comparable women in non-STEM jobs, considerably higher than the STEM premium for men. As a result, the gender wage gap is smaller in STEM jobs than in non-STEM jobs. However, women hold a disproportionately low share of STEM undergraduate degrees, particularly in engineering.

“We work closely with educators, business leaders, community leaders, and scientists to develop programs that will spark an interest, maintain that interest through education, and ultimately lead to careers in fields relating to STEM,” the spokesperson for SFAF noted, adding that these developing programs include: providing resources to educators, students, and families; hosting and participating in science-focused events, and sponsoring events.
